James O'Callaghan awarded the 2016 Milne Medal
The Milne Medal is awarded to an individual engineer for excellence in structural design, both in the overall concept and in the attention to detail in their work, and is named in recognition of the late Bob Milne, who served for many years as the Honorary Secretary of the IABSE British Group.
James' work has continuously challenged and redefined what is considered possible, particularly in contemporary architecture. His projects have twice been awarded the IStructE Supreme Award for Excellence in Structural Engineering – the David L Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, and Apple Zorlu, Istanbul. James is widely acknowledged as an authority and innovator in structural glass design through his long-term collaboration with Apple. Projects include the iconic retail stores in New York, Shanghai, and San Francisco amongst the some 200 completed to date.
Awarded by IABSE each year, James joins an exclusive group of significant, contemporary structural engineers to be recognised. Past winners are listed here.
James will be accepting the medal and delivering a lecture entitled 'Engineering Clarity' on 24 November 2016 at the Headquarters of the Institute of Structural Engineers in London, UK.
