Refurbishment of historical building with intricate glass stair supported on a single 8 millimetre curved steel spine.

This Bond Street jewellery store was completely refurbished. The existing building fabric was restored and new insertions were made.

A new curved stair takes its principle support from a central thin steel plate spine which tapers to a slender depth at the top. Glass treads cantilever off each side, propped by stainless steel rods. Curved glass balustrades are attached to the ends of the treads. Linked by the handrail, the composite action of these restrains the torsional behaviour of the stair.

A large rooflight brings light down into the rear of the store. Insulated Glass panels are supported on bespoke glazing bars which are stiffened by a net of stainless steel rods beneath to keep them as light and unobtrusive as possible.
