Redevelopment of the Williams & Griffin department store in Colchester, creating a highly transparent shop front facade with solar shading fins

Eckersley O’Callaghan has engaged in the redevelopment of Williams & Griffin department store in historic Colchester, providing facade engineering services for the high street shop front.  We developed an elegant and minimal solution from an original concept which showcases the store’s interiors.

The front elevation is 13 metres tall and formed of double-glazed units suspended on a lightweight steel structure custom designed for the project.  Our work involved the glazed facades and interfaces with the surrounding stone.

The glass is supported on solid steel plate transoms spanning almost 9m on the bigger span. These are hung from vertical plates with the glass joints up to a primary steel portal. The biggest panels are 3.6 x 2.6 metres. The feature fins are bronze-anodised aluminium and are supported through the joints back to the fins.
