Eckersley O’Callaghan has led the development of a new guide for the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT)<\/strong><\/a> titled \u2018An Introduction to Sustainable Facade Refurbishment\u2019<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hugh McGilveray<\/strong><\/a> led the development of the publication, working with the CWCT Refurbishment Committee under the guidance of the CWCT Sustainability Committee, alongside a wide group of industry collaborators, consultants, contractors and clients, who contributed as authors and reviewers throughout its development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this guide<\/strong>
Refurbishing an existing facade is one of construction’s most significant opportunities to reduce whole-life carbon, conserve resources and extend a building’s useful life, but these projects are rarely simple. Incomplete records, concealed conditions, shifting performance requirements and uncertainty over risk can all push teams towards premature replacement when refurbishment would have been the better outcome.

Until now, there’s been no dedicated guidance bringing these decisions together consistently. This guide sets out a practical framework covering how to understand an existing asset, challenge the project brief, optimise the level of intervention for components from minor repair through to replacement, upgrade performance and manage risk, with sustainability treated as a central parameter throughout, alongside safety, cost and durability. It’s layered with worked examples and case studies, including several drawn directly from our own refurbishment projects, to ground the guidance in real project experience.

Several years in the making<\/strong>
Developing the guide has taken a number of years. Facade refurbishment sits in a fast-moving space with evolving regulation, growing whole-life carbon requirements and shifting market expectations all of which have moved on during the time it’s taken to write it. Pinning down what ‘best practice’ really means, in a market still learning as it goes, has been a substantial and collective undertaking.

This guide was shaped by a wide group of contributors and reviewers from across the industry, consultants, contractors and clients, together with the CWCT Refurbishment and Sustainability Committees. Our thanks to everyone who gave their time, expertise and challenge to help bring it together.
