In this edition, we celebrate the process of making – featuring the first of our newly completed structural timber projects, demonstrating diverse building types and uses.
Vitsœ “The Most Beautiful Factory Ever Built”
System-Thinking: A New Way with Timber
Vitsœ's new HQ and Production Building in Royal Leamington Spa exemplifies the British furniture manufacturer’s system-thinking approach for the long-term. We collaborated with Vitsœ, Martin Francis, and Waugh Thistleton Architects to realise a timber structure that is modular, flexible, adaptable, and self-explanatory, with innovative material use.
One of the first projects in the UK where it is extensively used, beech laminate-veneer lumber has twice the strength of typical glue-laminated timber beams resulting in an elegantly slender, exposed frame. A total of 1,020 cubic metres of timber are used, representing 806 tonnes of sequestered carbon.

Apple Michigan Avenue, Chicago
Apple Michigan Avenue, Chicago
Boldly set on steps descending down to the Chicago riverfront, Apple’s recently opened flagship store offers the first customer experience in a fully glazed enclosure that provides a true relationship with the public realm. We engineered all glass elements on the project in collaboration with Foster + Partners – including balustrades, elevator enclosure and the perimeter facade.
At 3m wide, the glazing units increase in height from 4.5m to 10m tall on the riverfront and have carefully detailed connections that integrate within the overall structural system. The feature curved corner panels were created through tightly controlled fabrication techniques.

70 Wilson Street
70 Wilson Street
The transformation of 70 Wilson Street, in the City of London, has breathed new life into a building, showcasing the potential of refurbishment over demolishing existing stock. With Low Carbon Workplaces and AStudio, we engineered a new facade enabling a modern, transparent office;
replacing the previous dense, impermeable system. The undulating perforations across copper rain screens and the high-performance glazing system allow both light and air to flow through the facade, dramatically improving the internal working environment.
