A vibrant and spacious upgrade for The Salvation Army’s National Headquarters.
Eckersley O’Callaghan provided facade engineering services for the Salvation Army Headquarters in Denmark Hill, London. This six-storey building, which includes office space, a café, and multi-function areas, incorporates a variety of materials such as brick-faced precast concrete, an aluminium stick system, and glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) fins. Notably, it features a large internal atrium with a central skylight that fills the entire space beneath with natural light.
The team played a pivotal role in the project, engaging during Stage 4 design to deliver comprehensive facade sketchbooks and performance specifications. The project is targeted to achieve BREEAM Excellent.
Several significant challenges occurred during the project. One notable obstacle was the coordination of the complex interfaces between the precast concrete elements and stick system elements of the facade. Achieving seamless integration demanded a high level of precision and collaboration among the various project team members. Additionally, the project presented a unique challenge with very tight wall build-up and insulation requirements. Managing this aspect required careful planning and execution to meet both aesthetic and functional objectives.
