New private residence situated within a small riverside community in Patonga, New South Wales.
Overlooking Patonga Creek, this timber frame private residence achieves its architectural intent of being a finely crafted, materially expressive structure that is deeply connected to its site.
Eckersley O’Callaghan is providing structural engineering services from concept to construction, ensuring that performance requirements for strength and stability are met throughout. The structural system for this new private residence is defined by a series of locally sourced hardwood timber portal frames, which were carefully engineered to carry significant loads while maintaining slender proportions. These frames are stabilised through integration with ply-braced walls, which have been designed to discreetly provide diaphragm action to the double-height living area without disrupting the open-plan design.
A significant technical focus on the project was the development of bespoke concrete ground floor slabs. Particularly the design of custom base plates that anchor the primary frames to the ground floor slab, which were iteratively refined to achieve durability, tolerance control, and load transfer.
In addition, we also designed specialist joinery and secondary framing details to deliver the roof pop-out that runs along the length of the house which ensures structural continuity across the residence’s full length and resolves complex cantilevered roof projections at the perimeter. This required close coordination of the roof’s geometry, connection detailing and long-span behaviour to ensure the structure met both wind-uplift and serviceability criteria.
