From Speckle to Spark

2 April 2025

At last week’s Speckle London event, Charlotte Phillips and Jun Wen Loo presented how we integrate Speckle into our structural workflows to streamline complex design processes. By using Speckle’s interoperability tools, we automate the transfer of architectural design data into structural analysis models, eliminating manual input and enhancing collaboration.

Our approach combines 3D and 2D data exchanges. For complex geometry, we work with architects to define the data we need, setting up a computational workflow that extracts structural axes from 3D models. These geometries are uploaded to Speckle, allowing our team to retrieve, analyse, and feed updates back into CAD and 3D models. For 2D exchanges, we developed a tool that extracts structural axes from DWG files and seamlessly integrates them into ETABS, ensuring efficient coordination without the need for manual modelling.

Charlotte highlighted how this workflow was used to design a spiral staircase within a tight one-week deadline, demonstrating the efficiency gains from automating design-to-analysis exchanges.

Thank you to Speckle for hosting a great evening and to all the speakers for sharing their insights.
