Accessibility
In this newsletter, our first of 2024, we explore the synergy between engineering and accessibility. From projects like Tanbok School that exemplify our commitment to accessible education, to our Adaptive Reuse series that presents forward-thinking retrofit initiatives, we open the door to accessibility. We also unveil our Facade Access and Maintenance group, building on our facade engineering services to ensure efficient inspection, cleaning and sustainable upgrade capabilities for building envelopes.
Facade Access & Maintenance Services
Facade Access & Maintenance Services
We are strengthening our services with a dedicated team focusing on Facade Access and Maintenance (FAM) consultancy, led by Director Oliver Rigg and Associate Cameron O'Brien. This new team collaborates closely with our skilled facade engineers to play a crucial role in supporting architects, developers and facilities managers by assisting in the design and implementation of safe and efficient access systems for buildings. Our services encompass a range of offerings, including performance-based design strategies,
project management for modernisation/refurbishment, and site auditing. As building designs grow more intricate, our focus remains on advancing access and maintenance systems to meet the challenges posed by increasingly complex structures. From providing insights on cleaning and maintaining two storey houses to developing bespoke access systems for towers exceeding 300 meters, our involvement spans a diverse array of projects.

CERN
CERN Science Gateway Building, Geneva
The CERN Science Gateway Building has reached practical completion. The 'floating', light and transparent walkway bridge, forms the backbone of the new scientific hub at the world-renowned particle physics research centre on the Swiss French border. The main structure for the bridge sits along its roof, with the two fully glazed sides and walkway underfoot supported by suspended slim tension
rods from the structure above. Users are protected from the sun by slatted side metallic cantilevering canopies. Conceived to act as a street, ‘floating’ 6m above both carriageways of adjacent Route de Meyrin, the bridge is naturally ventilated and considered a space between the interior and exterior.

Tanbok School
Tanbok School, Vanuatu
The Tanbok School community project in Vanuatu, addresses local educational needs after natural disasters there and has completed construction. In collaboration with CAUKIN Studio and international partners, a robust classroom and library complex was built in just three months. The structure boasts a cyclone-resistant timber frame, local
hardwood cladding, and innovative roofing solutions. The library, designed to combat extreme humidity, employs passive strategies for book preservation. Prioritising simplicity, the project empowered unskilled workers and volunteers to construct the complex effectively.

Apple Mirage
Apple Mirage, Cupertino
Apple Mirage, the remarkable sculpture made from glass cylinders commissioned for Apple Park, was prominently featured in Apple's most recent Keynote presentation. The sculpture, in collaboration with architecture studio Zeller & Moye and artist Katie Paterson, comprises over four hundred glass columns weaving through and amongst the
trees, each is cast using sand from one of 70 deserts around the world, lending a different colour hue to the individual cylinders. We engineered a buried stainless-steel cassette frame system containing LED lighting at the base of each cylinder to capture the beauty of the artwork 24 hours a day.

Facade Refurbishment
Adaptive Reuse | Facade Refurbishment
The preceding two articles in our Adaptive Reuse series delved into the exploration of challenges associated with Adaptive Reuse. Our Facade Engineering team has a strong history in adaptive reuse and refurbishment, especially in dealing with sensitive heritage buildings. We are leading an
initiative with CWCT (Centre for Window and Cladding) to create a new sustainability guide for facade refurbishment, collaborating with consultants, clients, contractors, and specialists.

Digital Design | Smart Massing Tool
As part of our Digital Design toolkit, we are pleased to unveil the first internal release of the Smart Massing Tool (SMT), a parametric structural engineering and embodied carbon performance analysis tool. SMT empowers designers to explore various structural typologies and material options rapidly and precisely,
comparing geometrical aspects such as structural sizing (grids and elements), embodied carbon estimates, and other important metrics, enabling better decision-making during the early stages of design development.
