Design
Digital Design is a fundamental capability at Eckersley O’Callaghan, enabling engineers to work efficiently and freeing up space for creativity. In this newsletter, meet Senior Computational Designer Jun Wen Loo and discover how our Digital Design specialists streamline engineering projects and learn about our latest project updates.
Digital Design
Digital Design
Digital Design streamlines engineering and fuels creativity, enhancing our problem solving methodologies across all our services and strengthening collaboration across our global offices and partners. Offered as an embedded digital methodology as well as a stand-alone consultancy solution, we help our clients solve complex design challenges with these digital tools. These techniques were essential in our structural and facade
engineering work on Atlassian Central, pictured above. Providing a well-rounded service to our clients, our Digital Design team has expertise in automation, optimisation, advanced modelling for manufacturing, sustainability, building performance, integration and interoperability, all underpinned by our commitment to research and innovation.

The LOOP, Renault
The LOOP, Renault
After three years of renovation work, Renault has opened its new flagship store on the Champs-Élysées. Dedicated to automotive pop-culture, le défilé renault ® the carwalk is a cultural hub with a showroom, boutique and restaurant. EOC provided structural engineering services on the project with Franklin Azzi Architects, with the previous site being emptied to accommodate a 180m long car circuit known
as the LOOP. Consisting of a ramp running across two levels, the LOOP winds its way around the interior, inviting visitors to wander between the cars displayed. We also provided facade engineering services on the custom metal sections and large three-side-supported glass panels that showcases the LOOP from the avenue des Champs-Élysées.

Disassembly by Design
With only 1% of demolition materials reused in the construction industry in the UK, how can we help to make a difference? Facades can represent up to 30% of a building’s lifecycle embodied carbon. While the industry focuses on cutting upfront emissions, equal attention must go to maximising
material value at end-of-life. Maria Dimas explores the current state of facade design for disassembly and component reuse, uncovering how materials are handled today and where opportunities for reuse already exist.

Pireus Tower
The Old Vic, London
Originally built in 1816, The Old Vic is situated in a prominent location near Waterloo Station, London. The Grade II* listed theatre underwent an extension to create a six-storey backstage annexe with Haworth Tompkins Architects, refurbishing a pub behind the theatre to house their outreach programme and create additional working spaces. With a key focus on using recycled materials
throughout the project, Eckersley O’Callaghan provided facade engineering services to create a colourful brise-soleil facade of reclaimed theatre light barn doors that were donated from theatres across the country. Catching the shadows of the shading veil, the brise-soleil sits in front of the corten clad walling system letting light spill into the working spaces.

World Architecture Festival 2025
World Architecture Festival
Earlier this month Brian Eckersley chaired the jury for the 'Best Use of Timber' Special Prize at the World Architecture Festival in Miami, and James O'Callaghan chaired ‘Future Projects – Infrastructure’ and ‘Future Projects – Sport’, recognising projects that shape the future of our built environment.

Lisa Rammig was a deserving recipient of the ’40 Under 40 North America’ prize and was featured in their exhibition to celebrate this accolade.

As an added bonus, 1265 Borregas in Sunnyvale California by Michael Green Architecture received the
Sustainability Special Prize on stage at WAF. This commercial development was Google’s first mass timber office building. We were facade consultants for the project which was the first closed cavity facade system installed in North America, with timber shading blinds integrated into the cavity.

In our next newsletter, we will be sharing more about how our facade engineering team supports clients through our forensic and inspection service, using in-depth analysis to identify and resolve facade failures and ensure good ongoing envelope performance.
