Rose Court saw the refurbishment of a commercial office building on Southwark Bridge Road, including the addition of two new floors and extension of the facade.

2013 New London Architecture Awards – Shortlisted

Rose Court, the 1990s office development, was renovated and extended to increase the building’s floor area and make it more environmentally efficient, with a BREEAM Excellent certification.

On the main elevation, the new facade was designed to consider the constraints of the existing structure, minimize facade zone and optimize thermal performance. The facade was designed as a bespoke unitized system with a lightweight brick slip rainscreen. To ensure the best results, the project team worked very closely on each element of the facade and existing structure.

On the rear elevation, the previous brickwork was retained and adapted to receive new window systems. Extensive due diligence was carried out by EOC to evaluate structural integrity and thermal performance. A comprehensive strategy was established to remediate and strengthen the brickwork facades in both aspects.

The Rose Court building sits next to the remains of the Elizabethan Rose Theatre, which was one of London’s earliest public theatres. The project team has worked closely with the Rose Theatre Trust to ensure the existing historic playhouse is protected and continued to operate during the redevelopment works.
