Refurbishment of commercial office building on Southwark Bridge Road, including the addition of two new floors and extension of the facade.

New London Architecture Awards 2023 – Shortlisted

This 1990s office development, which is located close to Southwark Bridge, is being renovated and extended to increase the building’s floor area and make it more environmentally efficient, with an anticipated BREEAM Excellent certification.

On the main elevation, the new façade is designed to consider the constraints of the existing structure, minimize façade zone and optimize thermal performance. The façade is designed as a bespoke unitized system with a lightweight brickslip rainscreen. The project team has worked very closely to ensure each element of the façade and existing structure to ensure the best result.

On the rear elevation, the existing brickwork is retained and adapted to receive new window systems. Extensive due diligence was carried out by EOC to evaluate structural integrity and thermal performance. A comprehensive strategy was established to remediate and strengthen the brickwork facades in both aspects.

The Rose Court building sits next to the remains of the Elizabethan Rose Theatre, which was one of London’s earliest public theatres. The project team has worked closely with the Rose Theatre Trust to ensure the existing historic playhouse is protected and can continue to operate during the redevelopment works.
