Great Ormond Street Hospital is an acclaimed institution, and their new Zayed Centre for Research was developed in a partnership between University College London and the Hospital. The building contains an outpatients’ clinic, laboratories, specialist equipment rooms and workplaces for researchers.

Eckersley O’Callaghan acted as the client’s facade engineer for this new building located within the Bloomsbury Conservation Area, where the materiality of the facade was carefully selected to be sensitive to the building’s surroundings. The facade was constructed of a mix of systems, including glazed curtain walling, brickwork, precast concrete and terracotta.

A reflective glazed box at the upper floors extends up to becoming a translucent plant screen with a layered mesh backing. The terracotta fins on the front elevation were fixed back through the curtain walling, just one of a number of interfaces that required careful detailing in the design stage to ensure its success.

The building achieves BREEAM Excellent, helped by a facade design that uses passive measures including considered massing and orientation of windows to maximise daylight penetration and provide a high quality internal work environment.
